No Known Grave. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France
On the outbreak of hostilities the 1st battalion were stationed at Shorncliffe with the 4th Division and moved to York on the 18th of August 1914. Five days later they landed at Boulogne. Although Luke O’Neill had been born at Portglenone, he had lived most of his life at Rasharkin, but was at the time he enlisted, work- ing in Scotland. Luke joined the 1st battalion in a later draft to make up for men lost in earlier battles, but was with them in time for the Battle of the Somme. It was in this battle that he was killed on 12th October 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
